Another doctor who came as a Forty-Eighter was Charles A. Fischer. Born in Saxony in about 1820, he arrived in the United States in 1850. In February 1862 he enlisted in the 32nd Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry as a chaplain but served mainly as a surgeon. He was discharged due to a disability in October of that year and died in 1867 from dysentery contracted during his wartime service.

John Augustus Krack was born in 1823 in Baltimore to a Lutheran pastor and his wife, who then moved to Indiana. Krack taught school in Henry County, Kentucky, before moving to Louisville to study medicine under the renowned Joshua Flint. He took one course of studies at the Kentucky School of Medicine and graduated in the first class of the new school in 1851. He began his practice of medicine but soon became a businessman and a politician. He owned pharmacies and a glass company, served on the school board, the city’s Common Council and Board of Aldermen and worked as city assessor.
